An Overview of TDS – Totally Dissolved Solids

At My Pool Plans, we occasionally meet pool owners who experience problems in keeping the chlorine at a consistent level. In such situations, adding bags of pool salt to the pool has no impact on the chlorine reading. The reason for this anomaly may be Totally Dissolved Solids (TDS).

What is TDS

TDS is the sum of all the materials dissolved in a body of water, be it an ocean or a swimming pool. Any substance that is added to the water, like chlorine and algaecide, increases its TDS level. Even the simple act of immersing yourself in your swimming pool increases the water’s TDS level, as substances from your body – like hairspray, perfume and sweat – dissolve in the pool water.

Signs of a high TDS level

As stated earlier, difficulty in maintaining chlorine level could be an indicator of a high TDS level. The same conclusion may be derived if your pool water has a salty taste. The water acquires this unpleasant taste from the chemicals added to the pool.

When is TDS a problem

For swimming pools, the ideal TDS level should be under 2000ppm. When your TDS level exceeds this limit, it can reduce the efficacy of chlorine. Furthermore, it can corrode your pool equipment and cause skin and eye irritation to swimmers.

How to manage a TDS problem

Unfortunately, there is no miracle solution to this problem. If the TDS level of your pool water is over the limit, you will need to drain and refill your pool completely or partially, depending upon the TDS level.

If you have a pool in your backyard, you are aware of how much value it provides you in terms of relaxation, satisfaction and pride. If you want your pool to continue providing you with immense value, you ought to take good care of it. Unfortunately, pool owners tend to ignore the health of their prized possessions by doing only the bare minimum. If you are one such person, there is no better time than now to adopt a new resolution – I will take better care of my pool.

As one of LA’s established swimming pool sub-contractors, MyPoolPlans lists a couple of resolutions you should adopt, if you want your pool to remain in the pink of health.

Pool Maintenance

You may think that it is difficult and expensive to keep up with pool improvements. Such a thought will not cross your mind, if you plan properly. A swimming pool can be dangerous places, if it is not maintained properly. This year, adopt a resolution to enhance pool safety vigilance:

Why Are Fiberglass Pools Popular With Potential Pool Owners

Homeowners looking to get an inground swimming pool usually wonder about its impact on the value of their home. The answer to this legitimate and important question depends on the kind of pool homeowners choose for their backyard. As one of the top swimming pool designers in Los Angeles, we see a lot of interest in fiberglass pools. That’s because consumers expect certain things from their swimming pool:

  • Ability to meet the consumer’s need
  • Ability to enhance the aesthetics of the backyard
  • A long life
  • Low maintenance

Considering the expectations of consumers, it is easy to understand why aboveground and vinyl liner inground swimming pools are unpopular options. In many cases, they are not aesthetically pleasing and fail to enhance the backyard’s appeal. Furthermore, their liners are not durable; you need to replace them every decade or so. All in all, these options simply fail to meet the consumers’ expectations.

On the other hand, fiberglass pools require minimum maintenance, last for well over two decades and offer tremendous aesthetic value. That said, however, they are not always the ideal option for every pool project due to their size/depth limitations.

The impact on your home’s value

According to the National Association of Realtors, a fiberglass swimming pool may add about 5% to a home’s value. This means that you will enjoy some returns on your investment, although they may not match the total value of your investment. Keep in mind, however, that most people do not purchase a fiberglass pool for the purpose of investment; they purchase one for the purpose of experiencing happy memories and endless enjoyment.

Popular Myths About Swimming

Swimming is an integral part of our culture and history. Hence, it is not surprising to hear that several myths about swimming persist even today. Here, MyPoolPlans.com looks at a couple of swimming myths that refuse to kick the bucket.

Myth 1 – Do not swim immediately after eating

Stats from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) show that around 2500 people died due to unintentional drowning in 2005. None of these fatalities, however, was due to the consumption of a heavy meal. This myth probably originated in a manual from the early years of the 20th century. Later on, parent used the myth as a scare tactic, which contributed to its long life. The fact is that science does not support this myth. So, feel free to relax in your pool after a feast.

Myth 2 – Certain pool chemicals can expose urine in the pool water

A product that can catch culprits in the act of contaminating the pool is every pool owner’s dream come true. Unfortunately, the incredible ‘urine indicator dye’ is just a myth. While it could be possible to create a urine-detecting dye, the challenge would be to get this dye to react to only urine and nothing else. Until that happens, pool owners will have to depend on traditional detection methods like temperature increase or a confession.
